SANDRA COSBEY CONDUCTOR 1992 – 2003
Sandra Cosbey was appointed Conductor in 1992. Previous to that appointment Sandra had been the Accompanist from 1989 to 1992. Sandra was busy with teaching music, was busy during Music Festivals and other similar activities. She had extensive singing experience with the Hewetts, the Vilda McKeown Singers, The Patchwork Choristers and the Elizabethan Singers. Sandra also directed the Regina Bell Ringers.
Along with other musical engagements and the RMVC she was tutoring the three children she and her husband Robert were raising. In 1991 the three Cosbeys were known as the Cosbey Trio and were Guest Artists during an out-of-town concert in the Wolseley Opera House on Sunday, January 31, 1992 at 2pm. Thomas. aga 13, played the violin; Catherine, age 7, played violin and Peter, age 10, played the cello. The three siblings began playing as the cosbey Trio in 1991 and were Guest Artists for other events for the RMVC such as the T.C. Douglas Performing Arts Centre in Weyburn on Feb 13,1994. On May 3, 1998 the cosbey Trio were Guest Artists during the RMVC Annual Concert in Knox-Metropolitan United Church at 2:30 pm. The RMVC was a family affair for Accompanist 1975 to 1988 for the Cosbeys. Robert sang Tenor, Sandra was conductor and the three children were accomplished musicians worthy Guest Artists during any musical event.
The three years Sandra was Accompanist gave her a pretty good idea as to what the RMVC was all about. She knew what we could sing, what we could learn to sing and what we liked to sing. Sandra had us figured out. The notes, as on the sheet of music, were not always what we sang. At times the notes in the chords were slightly different but the solid, blended-sound of men singing, was there. It was that SOUND of men singing, almost instinctively, in four-part harmony, perhaps not as envisioned by the composer, but the SOUND was there. Audiences, as noted by Sandra, do not have the music in their hands. It is the SOUND they enjoy and return, time and again, to hear the SOUND!!
Sandra served the RMVC, with enthusiasm that was always at a high level of energy, from the start of the practice to the end. She always had faith in us and we in her. We all knew that Sandra had been with us for 14 years and would go on to other Challenges – some day. The day she told us she was moving on took us by surprise, It was emotionally charged, a day we had expected but did not want it to happen. Sandra needed to move on and so did we. Thank you, Sandra, for giving us 14 years of your life.
Here is a very short list of music we sang with Sandra as Accompanist and conductor.
